Formica Group Completes Company-wide LCA
May 2010
The Formica Group has completed a product Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) on key products and their environmental impacts on energy, water, waste and greenhouse gases in all its ten international plants. These plants are located in Canada, China, Finland, Spain, Thailand, Taiwan, USA, and the UK. The assessment was conducted by an independent, third-party carbon and sustainability consultant in accordance with the international standard ISO 14040 series.
"We started this comprehensive study last year to benchmark our existing processes, to set goals for the future and to provide a full carbon footprint for our group manufacturing facilities," said Gavin Todd, Group Development Manager for Sustainability, Formica Group. "By assessing the environmental impact of products throughout their full life cycles, from materials procurement and manufacturing processes to product delivery, we have an increased understanding of how our products can contribute to our clients' green building objectives."
The LCA analyzed core products manufactured and distributed by the Formica Group worldwide:
- High Pressure Laminates (HPL);
- Continuous Pressure Laminates (CPL);
- Interior & Exterior Compact Laminates;
- Finished laminate worktops manufactured by Formica Group.
Todd added: "The ultimate goal is to manufacture and develop products that have minimal impact on the environment. Completing a Life Cycle Analysis of our core products across all of our factories and that embraces the full supply chain for manufacture is a critical step and provides us with the foundation for realizing our sustainability initiatives."
