GREEN BUILDING ASSESSMENT

Green Building Assessment systems allow planners to examine whether buildings and developments meet sustainability goals. Formica Group has instituted design and manufacturing standards that ensure its products contribute credits to fulfil the Green Building Assessment. Formica Brand products support conservation and green building practices and may contribute toward achieving Green Building Assessment credits for New Construction & Major Renovations (NC), Schools and Commercial Interiors (CI).

LEED (LEADERSHIP IN ENERGY AND ENVIRONMENTAL DESIGN)

1 LEED GREEN BUILDING RATING SYSTEM

The U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) has produced the LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Green Building Rating System, which quantifies the measures taken toward constructing a greener building. The LEED Rating System takes into consideration practices relevant to the natural environment such as the use of sustainable resources, conservation of non-sustainable resources and reduction of pollutants.

2 LEED CREDIT CONTRIBUTION

Formica Laminates are applied as a decorative surface to cladding, cabinets, furniture and fixtures, partitions and worktops, among other elements. As a component material, they may contribute toward LEED credit for building certification in:

  • MR 4 Recycled Content per ISO Standard 14021
  • MR 5 Regional Materials, Option 1 in Commercial Interiors Rating System
  • MR 6 Rapidly Renewable Materials
  • MR7 Certified Wood (FSC Chain of Custody certification)
  • IEQ 4.1 and 4.4, Low Emitting Materials, Adhesives
  • IEQ 4.5 Low Emitting Materials, Systems Furniture and Seating per GREENGUARD certification

BREEAM (BUILDING RESEARCH ESTABLISHMENT ENVIRONMENTAL ASSESSMENT METHOD)

1 ABOUT BREEAM

BREEAM is a foremost environmental assessment method and rating system for buildings, with 200,000 buildings with certified BREEAM assessment ratings and over a million registered for assessment since it was first launched in 1990.

BREEAM sets the standard for best practice in sustainable building design, construction and operation and has become one of the most comprehensive and widely recognised measures of a building's environmental performance.

A BREEAM assessment uses recognised measures of performance, which are set against established benchmarks, to evaluate a buildings specification, design, construction and use. The measures used represent a broad range of categories and criteria from energy to ecology. They include aspects related to energy and water use, the internal environment (health and well-being), pollution, transport, materials, waste, ecology and management processes.

A Certificated BREEAM assessment is delivered by a licensed organisation, using assessors trained under a UKAS accredited competent person scheme, at various stages in a buildings life cycle. This provides clients, developers, designers and others with:

  • market recognition for low environmental impact buildings,
  • confidence that tried and tested environmental practice is incorporated in the building,
  • inspiration to find innovative solutions that minimise the environmental impact,
  • a benchmark that is higher than regulation,
  • a system to help reduce running costs, improve working and living environments,
  • a standard that demonstrates progress towards corporate and organisational environmental objectives.
